Lancaster County Sunset Silhouette
The sunsets here in Lancaster County can be breathtaking. Especially when you are walking or driving near a surrounding farm at the time.
I tried to capture this sunset in this one of a kind mug. I make all my work, from a ball of clay to the trimmed foot, on a kickwheel. When this mug was at aleather hard stage I painted it with black underglaze. I then carved the black away and left the silhouette of the sunset and farm. This technique is called sgaffito. Then it was set to dry. After the first firing, called a bisque, I painted in the sunset with colorful underglazes. These were gently washed off until the silhouette was revealed again. The inside was glazed black with a layer of mixing glaze giving it a varied blue and the outside was glazed transparent. Fired again, to approx. 2200 degrees. The secret to all my Mom's recipes is always "Love." I hope you find this in what I've made as well.
Food, microwave, and dishwasher safe. I always recommend hand washing and limited microwave use to protect the surface and longevity of handmade items.
